Focus
In a recent interview for a NetSuite consulting job, I put forward the idea of the company productizing their offerings to create recurring revenue. I was so excited about the concept and thought I could add value by leading this initiative.
The managing director very directly responded saying something like: "Alex our focus is on building our practice and improving our implementations. Once we've done that, we can focus on other areas. We want to be the best consulting firm out there."
I left thinking, "to be able to do great things, you have to learn how to say no to good ideas." It's easy to chase every shiny opportunity, but the real challenge is saying no to ensure you have the focus to make your current path successful.
I really respected that he was so direct about the company's focus.
