Code what you love until you love coding

Naval has a famous quote - "Read what you love until you love to read".

I hate the idea that you should force yourself to read, or learn to code, or any other activities you keep feeling guilty about not doing. I think there's an in-between, which Naval's quote exemplifies.

Start by doing the thing for fun, don't overthink it and don't force yourself to do it, especially when it feels like work.

I've found this to work for both reading and coding, and it wasn't a linear journey. I'd say I enjoy reading about 80% of the time. I enjoy coding 60% of the time. But that's much better than the 5% of the time I used to enjoy them.

So rather than forcing yourself to code, try finding something you want to build for yourself. Even better, something that will save you time or money.

It's amazing how much more willpower and motivation there is to learn, when you're doing it for reasons you care about.
